Mission

The mission of Marshall School is to educate students to become global citizens who demonstrate strong academic habits, respect, compassion, integrity, self-discipline, and intellectual curiosity.

Dear Friends,

My journey at Cathedral and Marshall Schools has had many phases, but all have something in common—an appreciation of the value that an education at this school makes on the life of an individual student. I’ve been a student, then an alumna. Now, I am a trustee enjoying the privilege of observing as today’s students experience their own Marshall journeys at this wonderful institution.

Every student starts his or her journey at Marshall School from a unique place. Marshall’s daily goal is to help our students find joy in exploration, curiosity, challenge, and growth, and discover the path to their highest potential. By the time they graduate, students have an opportunity to find success many times, in many different ways, on terms unique to them.

Marshall’s small size and individualized approach to education creates young adults who are skilled at communication, collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, and advocacy—and are global citizens ready and confident to take on the world. They become successful and disciplined college students, resilient adults, innovative and sought-after employees, with a lifelong love of learning.

Thank you for being a part of our students’ journeys and part of this amazing educational community. Your support helps make possible all that is extraordinary about a Marshall education. You help send remarkable individuals out into our world.

With gratitude,

Stephanie Ball ’81
President, Board of Trustees 2017-18

  • THE JOURNEY AND THE DESTINATION

At Marshall School, we know that every student starts from a unique place. What success ultimately looks like for every student will be a little different as well. Our job is to guide them along their journey as they grow, explore, and change. Our small size and student-centered approach allow this individualized outlook on each student’s educational journey. Our daily goal is to help our students find joy in discovery, curiosity, challenge, and growth, and discover the path to their highest potential.

  • PASSION FOR LEARNING

Marshall students and faculty are excited to come to school. Joy in learning, and curiosity about the world are palpable on campus. Marshall’s small size and flexibility means that we are designed for students to be active participants rather than passive recipients in their daily school experience. Genius Hour, iTerm, Poetry Out Loud, Brewery Creek water testing, Random Acts of Shakespeare, MORE wilderness and international trips, English Out Loud, Engineering Showcases—just to name a few—push students’ boundaries and ask that they take ownership of their education.

  • PREPARATION FOR LIFE

There’s a difference in Marshall students that goes beyond the new facts they’ve learned, or the new subjects they’ve mastered. The difference is in skills that prepare a student for opportunities beyond Marshall, no matter where life takes them. A Marshall education fosters communication, collaboration, creativity, and problem solving. Students are taught the importance of taking risks, and in knowing that failure is a part of the learning process. Marshall encourages a sense of adventure, helping students push their boundaries and try new experiences. This creates resilient adults, a lifelong love of learning, successful and perseverant college students, and innovative and sought-after employees.

  • GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING, ENGAGED CITIZENSHIP

Marshall believes a comprehensive education includes an understanding of the world we live in, and how to fully engage with that world. This starts at the local level, and extends to the global. Each Marshall student begins language study in our youngest grades, and is expected to achieve proficiency by graduation. The school community participates in short-term cultural exchanges throughout the academic year and summer with schools from across the globe, and Marshall is home to nearly 40 international students who spend the entirety of their high school career at Marshall.

  • SUPPORTING THE WHOLE LEARNER

Our students spend a large part of their day at Marshall. It is important to us that our school community is a positive place to spend that time, and that our students are better people for having attended Marshall. Our Mission Statement and our Statement of Community include words like compassion, integrity, respect, safety, inclusion, and well-being. Our students and faculty actively work with these principles every day. Marshall’s small size and flexible environment allow us to know every student in our building, and to be aware of every child’s individual needs. We know that we are educating complete people at Marshall: our definition of “doing well” involves much more than a grade on a test.

  • INDEPENDENCE AND INNOVATION

Marshall is an independent school. This results in a school that is accountable, flexible, responsive, accessible, and proactive. We are small by design, and we will always be small, so that our students will receive the most personalized, engaged, innovative education possible. We run Marshall School as we teach our students: we believe, when done well, there is great joy to be found in learning. We think it shows.

  • Giving Back

Each year, parents, grandparents, and other family of graduating Marshall seniors make special contributions to the Marshall Annual Fund in honor of their graduates. This year, the Senior Legacy Gift contributed $9,660 to the Annual Fund as a special thank you to Marshall from families of the Class of 2018.

    Annual Fund Class Giving

Marshall and Cathedral alumni from the classes of 2008, 1998, 1988, 1978, 1968 and 1958 gathered on campus this July to celebrate milestone reunions! As part of their celebration, they took part in a tradition of a special reunion giving effort to the Annual Fund, competing against each other for bragging rights as the most generous reunion class. Congratulations to the class of 1968, who contributed the largest total dollar amount to the Marshall Annual Fund, and to the class of 1958, who had the highest giving participation rate!

Special Thanks

  • Annual Fund

  • Fund-A-Need Gifts

Each year, the Marshall School community joins together in a special fundraising effort known as Fund-a-Need to address a pressing campus-wide need. This year's Fund-a-Need supported the renovation of Marshall's STEM classrooms and labs, in both the middle and upper school wings. Thank you to the generous donors who helped make this year's Fund-a-Need a success, and who helped ensure that Marshall's science, math, and engineering programs will be inspiring, innovative, and competitive for years to come.

    Restricted Gifts

Restricted gifts support specific projects of importance to both the donor and Marshall School. Gifts of this type also create and augment named, endowed scholarships and funds at Marshall. This year, a number of restricted gifts were received as part of the Next Horizon Campaign, a comprehensive campaign to support extraordinary advancements in several key areas of Marshall’s mission. For more information about the Next Horizon Campaign and the generous supporters who have already joined the effort please contact the Marshall Advancement Office.
